CSC -- The Canada Safety Council is a national, non-government, charitable organization dedicated to safety. Our mission is to lead in the national effort to reduce preventable deaths, injuries and economic loss in public and private places throughout Canada. We serve as a credible, reliable resource for safety information, education and awareness in all aspects of Canadian life - in traffic, at home, at work and at leisure. What are the Canadian Fitness Safety Standards?
The Canadian Fitness Standards are safety measures needed to protect clients, staff and others in a fitness facility. The Standards were first developed in Ontario in 1990 by a volunteer group of experts in the field. The Standards were reviewed and revised in 2000 and 2004. The last review process in 2004 was conducted via an on-line forum and feedback was received from fitness practitioners from across Canada. The standards are not legislated, however should be met in order to be in compliance and be recognized.

Why don't any facilities come up when I do a search?
You should try again, and broaden your choices for amenities and/or services, or remove all selections and just see what facilities are in your geographical area. Not all of the 10,000+ facilities have registered their services and amenities in the directory, and therefore those facilities will not appear if you are selecting a specific service or amenity.

What does it cost for a facility to register on the CanadianFitnessMatters.ca web site?
There is no cost to register your facility and list the services and amenities that the facility offers. There is a cost to become recognized for complying with the Canadian Fitness Safety Standards.
General information for fitness facility managers about the facility safety recognition
How does a facility apply to be recognized for having met the Standards?
- Complete the application form in the web site at Register your facility and submit to the CSC office.
- Submit payment based on the size of your facility. Fees range from $99 - $199. The fee schedule is outlined in the application form and also below on this page.
- Upon acceptance of the application it is necessary to obtain a letter from the facility's insurance company, verifying that CSC, FSAC, and CFM are "additional insurers" on the facility's general liability insurance policy.
What does a facility receive when they are recognized?
The facility will receive the following items:
- Certificate of recognition
- Door decals
- Posters
- Premium placement in the on-line fitness facility directory
- Safety Icon designating recognition
- Additional text about your facility in the directory
- Direct link to your web site
What does it cost to apply to have a facility recognized?
The cost is based on the number of employees.
